"Take care of Anneken Pettersen and Drammen's Museum!"

An introduction to Norway's first female museum director: A quick-witted woman among society's supporters in Drammen Museum's pioneering days.

Lecture by conservator NMF and head of the Marienlyst project, Nina E. Høye

When I, as a newly employed conservator and head of the Marienlyst project at Drammens Museum, began to delve deep into the Museum's yearbooks to get a first overview of the institution's early history, I immediately discovered a person who caught my interest: Anneken Louise Pettersen (1877-1970). who started as secretary for the Museum, advanced to conservator and was given the title of director in 1946 - as Norway's first woman! With her personal resources, she proved to be an important entry into what has been called Drammen Museum's pioneering period. She was responsible for all the annual reports from 1918 to 1943, and here you can read a lot between the lines. We can simply follow the thread of her activities year by year by reading her precise descriptions of collection growth, exhibition activities and the condition of the pleasure garden Marienlyst which originally housed the Museum's collections. I dare say that this is Norwegian museum history at a high level!
