Cultural Heritage Days 2025: Marienlyst Day

Welcome to Marienlyst Day on August 31st! Marienlyst Day is a family event focusing on the manor's main house and historic garden. What has Marienlyst Farm meant to the residents, the neighborhood and the city over the past 200 years?

This year, visitors will enjoy a garden walk in the historic pleasure garden by Jan Høvo, gardener at the Norwegian Folk Museum, musical performances by students from the Drammen School of Culture, a tour of the pleasure garden by Nina Høye, art historian and head of the Marienlyst project at Drammens Museum, a sale of historic roses, a few selected stalls with antiques and plants. There will be activities for children and demonstrations of traditional crafts in the new workshop in Vestfløyen.

We invite children and adults into our brand new workshop at Marienlyst. Here you can try your hand at lathing, stencil printing and making chipboard spirals.

• Assemble a log house. We have parts for a log house that you can assemble using simple instructions. Symbols on the end show where the log should be and Roman numerals on the top tell you in what order it should go. This is a great cooperative activity for the whole family.
• Join us in making stencil prints. In one of the rooms on the 2nd floor at Marienlyst, the walls are decorated using stencils. Here you will be able to use the same stencil to create patterns on paper.
• Test a tool that was used in the 18th century to make long spirals of shavings. The spirals were used to move the flame from one place to another. The plank is passed over the plane and spirals come out the side.
• On the 2nd floor of Marienlyst there are fun tasks for children, where you can smell typical smells from the 18th century. Can you recognize the smell? There are several things from the 18th century in a small exhibition up there. Can you figure out which things go together? And what doesn't belong in the 18th century?

The Cultural Heritage Days are an annual nationwide celebration of cultural heritage. The event, formerly known as the Cultural Heritage Days, is coordinated by the Cultural Heritage Association and consists of hundreds of events and activities that engage both volunteers and the public. The theme of the Cultural Heritage Days 2025 is “HOME”. The theme “HOME” opens up for reflections on what it means to be at home, whether in buildings, in nature or in a new country – Development, emigration, exchange.
