What is design? We will look at how design has changed over time, based on the shape of the chair. The students get to look at many different chairs in the exhibition: «1900s. Objects for modern life ». After the presentation, the students will be allowed to draw and create their own miniature chair using different materials.

Anchoring in the Curriculum

Arts and crafts, competence goals after 4th grade
- carry out art and design processes by seeking inspiration, exploring opportunities, making choices and creating your own products.

Before the museum visit

It can be nice to talk a little with the students about what design is?
What does a designer do?
Explain to the students that in the past, before factory production of furniture, it was craftsmen / carpenters who made all the furniture. It was very expensive, and therefore the furniture was not replaced until it was worn out. The people who made the furniture were the ones who designed them as well. Today it is designers who design the furniture, while others make them.

After the museum visit

Make an exhibition in the classroom of the students' chairs, feel free to create an environment around the furniture using shoe boxes or the like. which can be used as a room. The rooms are decorated and furnished.
Look at pictures of furniture from past style eras.
